Let me first say great forum, I have been reading posts here for a few days. I discovered this forum through the Rolex Reference Page and a email to Mr. Holbrook. He suggested that I would enjoy this forum and he was right.

Let me give everyone a quick background story first about Rolex and I. My dad first had an Explorer then a Sub while I was growing up. The Rolex fascination came young to me, about 13. By my senior year in high school I could wait not longer, while other kids were getting cars and class rings I was getting my first no-date Sub(wished I would have kept that one). After high school I went off to Army Basic Training(didn’t take the Sub with me)When I graduated I had a pocket full of cash so I promplty went down to the AD on Christmas leave and traded my Sub for a Black and Red GMTII( They gave me the whole 2 grand I paid in trade, now the 2 grand thing is why I wished I could have kept it. You can’t touch a pre-owned for that) I happily wore my GMTII for fifteen years desiring other watches and hooking my wife on Rolex. We agreed I wouldn’t get another good watch until she got a Rolex. In May of 2006 we got her a no-date oyster just like she wanted. Then the monster within came out. I first purchased a Cartier Tank, next came a Tag Carrera which I overpaid for and took it back. Then came a Omega Speedmaster Professional(which I love), finally came a new model Longines Hour Angle watch, which is quite cool but not comfortable enough to be an everyday watch. In the mean time my dad gave his Sub to my brother who would not ever buy a Rolex but wanted one. My GMTII was not getting much wrist time and my dad was missing his Sub so I offered to sell him my GMTII for what I paid for it( It was dad how can you make money on your dad?) I thought with the money I could get a Doxa or something else. By the very next day I was wanting another Rolex. I thought I will run up to the AD and pick up a lower price datejust to fill the void( there aren’t any lower priced datejust anymore) The small size of them just turned me off, then we worked down the case to the sport watches and there was the Yacht-Master Steel and Platinum which I had tried on several time through the years. I thought that is the watch but I can’t drop that kind of money so I left. The weeks that followed the obsession grew, I almost bought a pre-owned 2004 Yacht-Master. Then I found the Rolex Reference Page. With Mr. Holbrook’s write up on the Two-tone Sub, that one started fascinating me as well. I went back to the AD to compare the Two-Tone Sub and the Yacht-Master and with much debate cut a deal for the Yacht-Master( I put it on layaway because I wasn’t quite ready to drop that kind of money) it sat for one week but I had a little reservation in my mind. I had to be sure so I went to the other AD and compared a Yacht-Master with the new GMTII which the other dealer didn’t have in stock and said there was a long wait for. In comparing for awhile I was sure the Yacht-Master was the one as beautiful as the new GMTII is.

I could wait now longer, yesterday I pulled the Yacht-Master out of layaway and it is better looking and feeling than I remember. With all the other nice watches I have. Nothing feels like a Rolex.

If you made it through my email I have a question. First, to my surprise it has the Rolex Rolex Rolex around the dial, the other Yacht-master I tried on did not have that. Secondly, should my Yacht-master have the hologram at 6oclock? Thirdly, is the series number you are all talking about the first letter in the serial number? If so I guess mine is a Z series Yacht-Master. It is funny she gave me 11% off thinking it had came in before the price hike, turns out when she looked it up it had come in after the price hike. The owner was annoyed because he paid the new dealer price but I got a pretty good deal. This place also throws in the first five-year service free.

I look forward to becoming part of the group. It is great to have another Rolex, you never truly know what you have until it is gone.

I agree this is the best option. Let’s look at the scenarios if you did do it:

a) you love it. Great! Now you can either keep it or sell it (and since you got a good deal on a pre-owned won’t lose much if anything) and get a newer one now that you know you’ll wear it.

b) decide it’s not for you. Ok, you had an itch, scratched it & can now say you tried it. Again, since you got a good deal on a pre-owned one you can sell it & hopefully break even, but even if you lose a little you are able to sleep better knowing it’s not for you & you won’t get the itch again.

Yup, that pretty much sums it up…..
